Switch from Alchemer to Domandata

Alchemer packs in dozens of question types for market-research operations teams. Domandata trades that breadth for research-first workflows: randomized designs, replication packages, and stats-software exports out of the box.

Alchemer (formerly SurveyGizmo) markets one of the largest question-type libraries in the category, aimed at market-research and enterprise ops teams running large-scale programs. That breadth is real, but the platform isn't built around academic conventions like preregistration, instrument hashing, or a generated codebook for your dataset.

Why researchers switch from Alchemer

What Domandata does specifically to make social science research easier than Alchemer.

A flow you can actually audit

A visual canvas shows every routing path at a glance, instead of a rules/actions logic editor built for ops teams managing dozens of programs.

Academic conventions, not just ops breadth

Instrument fingerprinting, OSF integration, and a generated codebook come built in, where Alchemer's tooling is aimed at market-research reporting.

Pilot before you spend recruiting budget

Silicon Samples let you pretest an instrument with AI-simulated respondents before paying to field it to a real panel.

Plan your sample size where you build

Power and sample-size planning with a Sankey view lives in the same workspace as the survey — no separate stats software required.

Domandata vs. Alchemer

FeatureDomandataAlchemer
Randomized treatment assignmentRandomized treatment arms with weighted, stratified, or balanced allocation, plus permutation sets that shuffle values across variables without within-respondent repeats — all built in, no scripting.Randomization actions exist within its logic engine, authored per-survey rather than as a dedicated experiment-design workflow with permutation sets.
Quotas & partner status linksPath-aware quotas on treatment arms and Flow endings, with shareable quota-status links so partners can watch fill counts live without editor access.Quota management exists within its logic engine; path-aware routing and shareable partner-facing status links aren't first-class features.
Branching, piping & flow logicVisual flow canvas shows every routing path, condition, and piped variable at a glance.Deep logic and piping support, built around a rules/actions editor rather than a single visual respondent-path map.
Research-specific question typesConjoint, MaxDiff, card sort, constant sum, text highlighter, click heatmaps, signature, file upload, and AI text/voice chat ship as built-in question types.Large question-type library (including conjoint and MaxDiff on higher tiers) aimed at market-research ops, not academic export conventions.
AI-simulated pilot testingSilicon Samples pilot-test a survey with AI-simulated respondents — built from personas, panel data, or prior responses — before fielding it with real people. No AI-simulated respondent feature; piloting an instrument means fielding it to a small real sample first.
Power & sample-size planningBuilt-in power and sample-size planning with a Sankey view of expected allocation, right where the survey is built. No built-in power or sample-size planning tool.
Data-quality toolingAutomated quality scores (speeding, straightlining, duplicate devices, bot signals), author-defined attention/dwell/impossible-combination rules, and a human review queue with an exportable cleaning log.Standard response validation; author-defined attention-check and dwell-time rules aren't a first-class feature.
Export to SPSS/Stata/RNative SPSS (.sav) and Stata (.dta) files, a generated codebook, and randomization audit columns (answer order, treatment assignment, fixed-order comparisons) in every export.SPSS export is available; a generated academic codebook and randomization audit columns are not standard output.
Open Science / preregistrationLock and fingerprint a preregistered instrument, push study artifacts to OSF or Harvard Dataverse, and export a complete replication package — data, code, codebook, and instrument bundled together. No OSF/Dataverse integration or instrument fingerprinting; preregistration conventions aren't part of the workflow.
PricingFree plan for drafting and previewing instruments; paid plans add Flow, Deploy, Export, and team collaboration, with published self-serve pricing.Plan tiers are built around enterprise/agency programs, with pricing generally quoted rather than published for individual researchers.

Migrating from Alchemer

Alchemer doesn't share a file format with Domandata's importer. Export or print your survey to PDF or Word, then upload it through Domandata's Import dialog — the document parser reads in your questions and answer choices for you to clean up in Block Builder.

Import method: Upload a PDF or Word export
  1. Export your survey as PDF or Word

In Alchemer, use the survey's print/export option to generate a PDF or Word copy of your questionnaire.

  2. Upload the document to Domandata

Open Import from your workspace dashboard, choose File, and select the exported document. Domandata parses questions and choices into Block Builder.

  3. Review and finish each question

Document parsing is a starting point — check question types, required flags, and any rules/actions logic that didn't carry over.

  4. Rebuild logic and randomization in Flow

Recreate skip logic and any randomization actions in Flow, using variables and permutation sets for multi-arm designs.

  5. Preview, then re-point distribution links

Walk the survey in Preview, then update any panel or embed links to point at your new Domandata deploy link.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I import my Alchemer survey automatically?

Alchemer doesn't share a file format with Domandata's importer. Export or print your survey to PDF or Word, then upload it through Domandata's Import dialog — the document parser reads in your questions and answer choices for you to review in Block Builder.

Does my Alchemer rules/actions logic carry over?

No — rules-and-actions logic isn't captured by a document import. You'll rebuild any skip logic and randomization actions visually in Flow, using variables and permutation sets for multi-arm designs.

What happens to my existing Alchemer response data?

Import brings over your questionnaire structure, not historical responses. Export your existing response data from Alchemer as CSV and keep it alongside your new Domandata dataset.

Is there a free plan?

Yes. Domandata's free plan covers drafting and previewing instruments, so you can bring your Alchemer survey over and try it before upgrading for Flow, Deploy, and Export.

Ready to bring your survey over?

Create a free account, then use Import from your workspace dashboard to bring in your Alchemer survey.
