How Do I Connect Canvas to a Classroom?
Canvas connects to one Domandata classroom through an LTI 1.3 External Tool. A Canvas administrator sets up the tool once, and then professors can create, monitor, and grade Domandata assignments without copying assignment details by hand.
- Open the Domandata Classroom page and choose Connect Canvas.
- Copy the Developer Key configuration URL. Give it to your Canvas administrator.
- In Canvas Admin, create an LTI Developer Key by URL, save it, and turn it on.
- Install the External App in the Canvas course by Client ID. One course-level installation maps to one Domandata classroom.
- Copy the Client ID and Deployment ID into Domandata, choose the matching Canvas environment, and connect.
Domandata does not ask for a Canvas password or store a Canvas access token. The connection uses signed LTI launches and short-lived service tokens for assignment metadata, submissions, grade readback, roster sync, and course-copy notices.
How Do Professors Create Canvas Assignments?
- In Canvas, create an assignment and choose External Tool as its submission type.
- Choose Domandata Assignment. In the setup screen, enter the title, instructions, points, optional due date, and submission mode.
- Optionally choose a starter survey, decide whether students can resubmit, and require a preview, consent language, or a minimum question count.
- Choose Add to Canvas, then save or publish the assignment.
- Open the assignment once from Canvas. Domandata mirrors its title, due date, points, and grading connection into the Classroom page.
Canvas is the source of truth for the final title, due date, points, and grades. Opening the assignment again refreshes those details in Domandata. Assignment-specific submission mode and resubmission settings remain attached to the Domandata resource link.
How Do Student Submissions Reach SpeedGrader?
Each student opens the assignment from Canvas and signs in to Domandata if prompted. That signed launch links the student's Canvas identity to the matching Domandata account and opens an assignment-specific page inside Canvas.
On that page the student can read the instructions and requirements, create from the professor's starter survey, choose one of their classroom surveys, submit or resubmit, see every attempt, refresh the Canvas grade and feedback, and retry a failed Canvas sync. Students can also submit from the normal Submit to professor dialog in Domandata.
The classroom's submission mode controls what the professor sees:
- Link: SpeedGrader receives a link to the student's live survey. Later edits are visible.
- Frozen Snapshot: SpeedGrader opens the exact submitted version inside the grading frame, rendered read-only with the same survey-preview components, theme, and typography as the editor's own Preview tab — not a plain-text dump. If the survey randomizes conditions, a Path control lets the professor switch which condition they're viewing without affecting what the student actually experienced. The professor also gets version and attempt details, prior-attempt comparison, JSON download, Print / Save PDF, and an editable-survey link when their Domandata permissions allow it.
Step: Choose frozen-copy submissions
After a successful submission, Canvas marks the work as submitted and awaiting manual grading. Canvas remains the source of truth for scores and feedback. Domandata can read that result back and identifies a resubmission that is newer than the current Canvas grade. If Canvas is temporarily unavailable, Domandata keeps the classroom submission and offers a retry.
How Do Roster Sync and Invitations Work?
On the Classroom page, open Canvas Diagnostics and choose Sync Roster. Domandata reads the course membership list supplied by Canvas and shows active, inactive, linked, and sign-in-pending identities.
Roster sync does not silently create Domandata accounts or accept terms for a student. A Canvas student becomes linked only after opening the assignment and signing in to the matching Domandata account. Students dropped from Canvas are marked inactive on the next sync; their prior submissions remain auditable.
How Do I Check or Repair the Connection?
Canvas Diagnostics shows the last verified launch, available service scopes, roster and grade-sync status, unlinked students, failed submissions, course-copy notices, recent activity, and signing-key status.
- Choose Sync Roster after enrollment changes.
- Choose Refresh Grades to read scores and feedback from Canvas without overwriting them.
- Choose Retry Failed Submissions after correcting a scope, identity, or availability problem.
- If a launch reports a signing-key warning, ask the Canvas administrator to refresh the Developer Key configuration before rotating away the prior key.
When Canvas copies course content, Domandata receives a signed course-copy notice. The first launch in the copied course creates a new assignment mapping with the original settings, while student identities, attempts, submissions, and grades are not copied.
