Exclusive and Select All Choices in Multi-Select Questions

Use Exclusive And Select All Choices

Multi-select questions sometimes need a choice that changes the meaning of every other choice. Mark None of the above, Not applicable, or Prefer not to answer as Exclusive so selecting it clears every other answer. Mark All of the above as Select All so selecting it automatically selects and temporarily locks the choices it represents.

Block Builder: Choice Behavior

These settings are available for multi-select Multiple Choice and Dropdown questions, Grid Matrix questions that allow multiple selections per row, and Card Sort questions that allow multiple categories per card.

Configure Choice Behavior

Step 1: Enable the question's multi-select mode. Turn on Allow multiple selections, Allow multiple selections per row, or Allow multiple categories per card, depending on the question type.
Step 2: Open Options. Find Choice Behavior. Every authored option, grid column, or card-sort category has a mode.

Step 3: Mark zero or more Exclusive choices. Selecting an Exclusive choice clears ordinary answers, a Select All choice, and any other Exclusive choice. Selecting an ordinary answer after an Exclusive choice clears the Exclusive choice.
Step 4: Optionally mark one Select All choice. Selecting it checks the eligible choices automatically. Those auto-selected controls are disabled while Select All remains selected, which prevents respondents from submitting a partial set that contradicts the label.
Step 5: Choose whether later choices are excluded. Turn on Exclude choices authored after this one for an option such as All of the above. Put choices that should remain independent—commonly Other, Not sure, or None of the above—after it.
Step 6: Preview every path. Test ordinary combinations, each Exclusive choice, Select All, deselecting Select All, and any choices placed after it.

How The Rules Interact

Exclusive beats every other state. Selecting an Exclusive choice leaves only that choice selected.
Select All never selects an Exclusive choice. This prevents combinations such as All of the above plus None of the above.
Only one Select All choice is active per question dimension. Choosing Select All on another authored choice moves the behavior there.
Deselecting Select All clears the choices it forced. Choices excluded because they were authored later remain unchanged.
Later-choice exclusion uses authored order. It does not change when response order is shuffled or flipped.
Random subsets affect only shown choices. Select All selects the eligible options actually shown to that respondent.

For labels that say “above,” keep response order fixed or lock the positional anchor. A shuffled visual order can make “All of the above” misleading even though the rule still follows authored order.

Examples

Services used: Library, Transit, Community Center, All of the above, None of the above. Mark None as Exclusive. Mark All as Select All and exclude later choices.
Reasons for nonparticipation: several substantive reasons plus Prefer not to answer. Mark Prefer not to answer as Exclusive.
Grid Matrix: when each row can receive several columns, an Exclusive column clears the row's other columns and Select All fills only that row.
Card Sort: in multi-category mode, an Exclusive category removes the card from its other categories; Select All assigns that card to every eligible authored category.

Data And Quality Notes

Exports store the resolved selected set, not a special shortcut token. If a respondent chooses Select All, every forced choice appears in the answer. Domandata also validates these rules when a response is submitted, so contradictory combinations cannot be inserted by bypassing the visible controls.

Instrument Review checks this configuration before publishing. It flags All/None-style choices that are not configured as Select All or Exclusive, an “All of the above” choice that still includes later authored choices, terminal choices that are not grouped at the bottom, and randomized terminal choices that are not pinned. Each deterministic finding includes an Auto-fix action.

Qualtrics QSF imports preserve these rules. Choices marked Make Answer Exclusive become Exclusive in Domandata. An explicitly exclusive All-style choice becomes Select All, including the later-choice exclusion needed by “above” wording. Checkbox-matrix answers receive the equivalent column behavior, and choices fixed by Qualtrics advanced randomization remain locked. A None/All-style choice that was not configured in the source stays unconfigured so Instrument Review can identify it instead of silently changing the imported instrument.

Choice behavior follows authored indices and is preserved when you rename, add, remove, or reorder choices in Block Builder. As with any live answer-list change, preview and republish after editing, and document changes made after collection begins.
