Grant SONA External Study Credit

In SONA Systems, a survey hosted on another website is an online external study. SONA can't see what happens on that other site, so it waits for the site to tell it a student finished. Domandata does that for you: when a student reaches the end of your survey, Domandata sends them straight back to SONA, and SONA grants the credit you set for the study.

You don't grant anything by hand, and students don't need to type in a code.

1. Step 1: In SONA, set the study up as an online external study. Enter the number of credits each student should get.

2. Step 2: In SONA, copy the client-side completion URL. It's on your study's page and contains webstudy_credit.aspx. Don't use the server-side URL.

3. Step 3: In Domandata, go to the Deploy tab and open Recruitment. Click SONA Systems.

4. Step 4: Paste the completion URL into any of the boxes. Domandata fills in your SONA site, experiment ID, and credit token from it.

5. Step 5: Click Connect SONA Systems. Your survey's Complete ending now sends students back to SONA for credit.

6. Step 6: Copy your study link and paste it into SONA as the study's web address. Click Copy Link next to Share the study link. The link ends in id=%SURVEY_CODE%, which tells SONA which student is taking the survey. Without it, SONA can't credit anyone.

7. Step 7: Publish your survey. If it's already live, click Push Changes instead.

• Students who finish are sent back to SONA and get credit right away.
• Students who don't qualify, whose group is already full, or who fail an attention check you route out are shown a message saying they won't receive credit. They aren't sent to SONA.
• Students who close the survey early never reach SONA, so they don't get credit.
• Your own test runs never send anything to SONA, so you can try the survey as often as you like.

Sometimes you need to step in: a student's browser crashed on the last page, or your course gives partial credit for trying. Domandata can't change credit in SONA, but it gives you what you need to do it there.

2. Step 2: In SONA, open your study's list of participants. Find the student by the same code and grant, change, or remove their credit.

Because the code is anonymous, you can match students up without ever storing their names in Domandata.

• SONA says the credit token is wrong. The completion URL came from a different study, or the study's token changed in SONA. Copy the client-side completion URL again and paste it in Recruitment.
• The id column is empty. SONA's study web address doesn't end in id=%SURVEY_CODE%. Copy the study link again and paste it into SONA.
• Students finish but stay on Domandata. The survey isn't published with the latest changes. Click Push Changes on the Deploy tab.
• The survey sends students somewhere else. You changed the Complete ending's redirect by hand. Reconnect SONA Systems in Recruitment to put it back.

SONA Systems support may ask for these.

• Students who finish are sent to https://yourschool.sona-systems.com/webstudy_credit.aspx with your experiment_id, credit_token, and survey_code={{id}}, where {{id}} is the code SONA passed in.
• The redirect happens automatically, with no button for the student to click.
